A brief History

On the provincial Italian road ascending from Vergato to Zocca, after numerous hairpin turns, lies Cereglio, smiling and sunny, in the middle of a large Alpine basin crowned by mountians extending as far as the eye can see.

Located seven hundred meters above sea level--45 kilometers from Bologna and 11 from Vergato--Cereglio is protected from the harsh climate of the north, and thus enjoys temperate weather even during the winter.

The locality is much appraised for its vast surrounding woods and for its pure, ozone-rich air. In fact, as a result of these healthy conditions, Cereglio has long been recognized for its notably low mortality-rate, which Calindri, an abbot and scholar of antiquity, pointed out early on in his celebrated chronicles.

According to legend, the name "Cereglio" derives from "Cerere," the name of the Roman godess of fodder, and from "Helios," the Greek word for sun. Thus, this etimology itsself makes clear reference to the considerable fertility of Cerelio's soil and to this village's fortunate sunny location.

wIn the midst of this surround of natural beauty lie the Cerelia springs, from which flow the healing waters which have rendered this location famous throughout history.

One arrives at the springs from another nearby basin encircled by age-old chestnut trees. Their refreshing shade creates a relaxing invitation to the "clear, fresh and sweet waters" of this source, whose therapeutic virtues have been exalted since the age of the Roman Empire.
